Our Bears Settle in for Winter: Time for Their Seasonal Rest
Our much loved resident bears bears, Brum, Brumma, and Maja, are beginning to slow down as the cooler seasons approach, preparing to enter a natural period of Torpor. Torpor is a special state of deep rest that allows them to conserve energy by gently slowing their metabolism and lowering their body temperature.
Since their arrival in 2016, we’ve made important adjustments to enhance the conditions for their Torpor each winter, greatly benefiting their health. This natural rest period may help reduce the likelihood and intensity of osteoarthritis as they age.
During Torpor, the bears might be out of sight in November, December, January, and February. However, you can still explore our one-of-a-kind Bear Broch Visitor Centre—a beautifully crafted replica of an ancient Scottish stone dwelling, reflecting the kind of structure that may have existed when bears last roamed wild in Scotland.
